Did You Know...

... that Airspeed is up by one point after three 8-way rounds?

Team hangar in Eloy
posted Oct 24th, 2005 - Round two in 8-way was almost an exact copy of the meet opener. France was fast and clean, while Airspeed looked more aggressive compared to previous meets. The NSL News visited the Airspeed corner in the team hangar between round two and three, and Craig Girard confirmed this impression:

"Yeah, we are not going to wait until round four any longer. We are going for it from the beginning. The nice skydiving is over, we are aggressive now. They had a headstart since Croatia 2004, and we are making it up now."

The young French 8-way team might get under more pressure if the new Airspeed style continues to be successful. The teams are still very close, just fractions of a second have separated them so far. Airspeed won the 22nd point in round two by a 3 - 2 decision in the judging room. The Omniskore freeze frame at 50 seconds was interpreted to the advantage of the US team, and Airspeed had a 2-point lead after two rounds.

The other NSL News assumption after the first round seems to become true, as well. An earlier NSL News story had mentioned that the Italian 8-way team would have to show progression to secure the 4th place in the world rankings that it won in Russia this year.

There is no doubt after round two that there is a lot of Italian 8-way progression, probably more than expected. Italy Ex3mo has kept up with the Russian 8-way team so far. In fact, Russia lost one point due to an infringement in round two, and Italy was up by one point going into round three. The 8-way competition could turn into bronze medal centention for Italy rather than defending or securing the 4th position.

Round three confirmed and changed the picture at the same time. France LaPalisse/Maubeuge and Arizona Airspeed confirmed that they will not allow each other any space, it will continue to be a horse race. However, Airspeed was not able to increase the pressure since France posted the highscore of round three and reduced the Airspeed lead to one point.

Italy confirmed that its 8-way team will probably make it an exciting competition for the bronze medal, unless Russia steps up a few paces closer to the former rivals on the very top. However, Russia won two points back over Ex3mo in round three and has a 1-point advantage at the end of the 8-way day.

The 8-way teams are done for today, and it's time for the 4-way teams to take the stage. Airspeed Odyssey is the only team with double duties, which will make it a very long day for Eliana Rodriguez, Craig Girard, Brian Johnson and Andy Delk. Stay tuned, 4-way information will follow soon.
