Did You Know...

... that Seattle Swift is training hard for the USPA Nationals 2016?

1st place AA Class: Seattle Swift
posted Jul 20th, 2016 - The AA Class was the most popular category on last weekend's record breaking leaderboard with a total of 71 teams. Northwest Skydiving League team Seattle Swift took the top spot away from the French team Arbeit 4 ASPU Maubeuge. Swift was five points ahead after five rounds, which were completed by all AA Class teams. Both teams actually completed the next three rounds, as well, and Swift maintained and extended the lead.

The adjusted leaderboard is showing the rankings after Round 5, which was the end of the competition at the Southern Skydiving League meet. The British teams added another round, while the French teams completed all ten rounds.

Seattle Swift is no big surprise on the top of the AA Class leaderboard. NWSL Director Deb Correia said that the team is training hard for the USPA Nationals this year: "They have done several camps with Christy Frikken in the tunnel and the sky, and also have a couple of camps planned with Andy Honigbaum in the coming weeks. It was great for them to get to compare their scores with so many other teams in the US."

Fun Sponge 2015 with Zack Smathers (middle)
Deb Correia said that the weather forecast for the weekend at Skydive Snohomish was not very promising and called for thunderstorms: "But they never developed. There was one brief shutdown for weather, but other than that, teams were able to jump the entire day."

Her own team, Fun Sponge, has a new lineup this year. The original 2016 plan was to move up into the AA Class with the addition of her husband Dave Correia in the tail slot, plus returning Fun Sponge members Kelli and Jay Alspach.

However, the team suffered a major setback when videographer and former Fun Sponge tail Zack Smathers, died in June in a skydiving accident. In addition, Deb Correia has been nursing an injured back and has been unable to jump.

Fun Sponge last weekend
Lauren Galloway agreed to fill in for Deb Correia twelve hours before the meet, and Kevin Porter took on the camera duties. Lauren Galloway is a new 4-way competitor who has only participated once at an Indoor Cloud League event at iFLY Seattle a few months ago.

With no team training in many months and a 4-way Rookie in the inside center slot, Fun Sponge decided to continue in the A Class, at least for the July meet. Deb Correia said that Lauren Galloway filled her slot well: "She did an awesome job helping Fun Sponge take first place in the A Class. The team also benefited from a loan of a camera jacket from Das Booties."

Deb Correia had more time than usual, as she was not competing this time, and she provided additional meet information:

Improvised zipper repair...
"Precision had its complete lineup for this meet, with David Zhang returning to join Steve Platt, Amira Morghem, and Ahmed Abdussalam. Scott Callentine, who filled in for David last month, flew camera for the team. Ahmed has devoted much of his skydiving time to freeflying and is new to 4-way. He expressed how fun it has been to be challenged by learning a new skill in the sport."

She said that Das Booties has benefited from the tunnel time that Randy Barbee, Isaac Bahr and Kurt Ferstl have done since last season: "Randy and Kurt have participated in most of the Indoor Cloud League events." In addition, they had monthly coaching sessions with Deb Correia, where NWSL judge Bill Selig filled the 4th slot. Monika Brunnenkant and Kurt Ferstl also did additional 1-on-1 training with Dave Correia a week before the July outdoor meet.

Deb Correia finished her meet report with a funny incident: "Kurt Ferstl had a zipper on his jumpsuit blow out on a 5-minute call. Local rigger Adrian "Spotty" Bowles produced a needle and thread, and I quickly sewed the zipper together. Sam Oldfield wrapped Kurt in duct tape to save the day, and they even made the call!"
