... that awards list at the Z-Scrambles is almost as long as the leaderboard?

Bob Byrne with Teiwaz after the Saturday jumps
posted Jun 8th, 2011 - The NSL News story on 29 May 2011 reported that 14 teams participated at this year's Z-Scrambles at Skydive City in Zephyrhills, Florida. It took a little bit longer than expected until the event report can be completed now with scores and more details.

Teiwaz and the SinnerZ launched the Z-Weekend with the first scores on Saturday. Several of the players on Saturday then continued on Sunday for additional four rounds in the Z-Scrambles.

Teiwaz member Bob Byrne guided the 5 Cans as the team captain to the 4th place. SinnerZ members Gary Fox ended up one single point behind the 5 Cans in 5th place with Too Damn Hot. Craig Sagalow was scrambled into the Scarlett’s Here Where’s Janet lineup on Sunday. Catherine Datte ended up with Brain Damaged.

Laura Song, Oren Kalb and Christine Freiherr on Sunday morning
Oren Kalb and Laura Song have been mastering this popular event for several years. The four completed rounds on Sunday, May 29th, doesn't sound like much. However, the administrative work in the morning to scramble the participants in matching lineups is a big deal with so many teams, and the weather has to cooperate, as well.

Laura Song reported that the last time that all teams completed all four rounds was four years ago: "Usually, we have the afternoon rains that have shut down the meet without fail, but this time the weather gods were on our side."

She and Oren Kalb now realize that a dedicated Twin Otter can guarantee no more than a maximum of 16 teams maximum if they still want to be able to sort, jump, judge and hand out the prizes before dinner: "It still makes for a long day - about 10 hours start to finish – but the participants don't seem to mind that too much since everyone knows the focus is on the rookies and integrating them with the rest of the dropzone operation."

Each lineup has an assigned team captain who is usually a more experienced 4-way competitor and guides the team through the meet. The Sinking Gators, with Laura Song's former 4-way team mate Christine Freiherr as the team captain, won the Z-Scrambles this year with a 9.5 average. Team captain Yvette Walter finished in 2nd place with Snot Rocket Surgery, and former DeLand 5 member Paul Bartkus captained Wardrobe Malfunction to the 3rd place.

Laura Song and Oren Kalb are also collecting lots of prizes year by year for the award ceremony in the evening. The prizes are not only going to the winners, they are also scrambled to all participants. They are a part of the $25 registration that covers video and the dinner, which is prepared by Janine Colombo’s Hard Dock Café.

Laura Song also explained more of the logistics for the event: "Skydive City and DZ operator TK Hayes provide everything that we need to stage a fun event, and Debbie Dellibac at manifest keeps the show running. Video was provided by Charity Kelly, Jay McCahan, Martin Skrzypczak, Randy Lopez, Pink Floyd and Josh Roark."

Dave "Pink" Floyd is back in camera business
Yes, Dave "Pink" Floyd, Z-Hlls inventory of the old days, is also back with a camera on his helmet. He has always been a passionate videographer, not only in freefall. He also likes to take high-quality photos of many other motives. He took a break for several years and is now back in camera business.

Laura Song is very proud of her event supporters and sponsors: "We have the best event sponsors, and we're so grateful to all of them. This year, the team prizes included four free TonySuits Pitts Specials, four Sunrise Manufacturing Wings containers 50% off, four Sunshine Factory certificates for free shirts, 12 Special Operations Command Parachute Team challenge coins, 15 Nylon City packing tickets and four pairs of NSL gloves (which guarantee to bump your average up by 2 points...)"

The videographers had their own drawing for a free TonySuits Camera Suit or Jacket. Additional random drawing prizes were two Blue Skies Mag 1-year subscriptions, 50% off two Tunnelcoach.com tunnel sessions with coaching, two free Larsen & Brusgaard SOLOIIs, two free Larsen & Brusgaard OPTIMAIIs and another two free Larsen & Brusgaard VISOIIs with wrist cuff. Only the award ceremony alone takes almost as much time as the competition...
