Did You Know...

... that Tonix sounds better than Phoque?

Tonix lineup at the 5th DIPC 2014
posted Dec 14th, 2014 - One of the six teams who posted highscores for any of the ten rounds in 4-way Women at the 5th Dubai International Parachuting Championship - behind the French Girls - was the Canadian team Tonix.

As most of the other teams in this competition, Tonix was a lineup that was put together just for the event. However, the team members knew each other from training and competition with other Canadian teams.

The first part of the name is related to the 4-way Women team Torque, represented by Valerie Poulin and Nathalie Metivier for Toxin in Dubai.

Torque would have been the team officially representing Canada in 4-way Women after placing 3rd behind Evolution and Fuzion at the Canadian Nationals 2013, and with Fuzion not planning to compete at the 5th DIPC 2014.

Torque at the 4th DIPC 2013
Torque, with Valerie Poulin (Center Outside), Nathalie Metivier (Point), Johanne Cardinal (Tail), Luce Brault (Center Inside) and Jonathan Cayer on camera in the lineup, had competed for Canada in the Open Class at the 4th DIPC 2013, when Evolution could not attend due to Martin Lemay's shoulder surgery.

The rankings of the Canadian Nationals 2013 were still valid this year, and as Fuzion was not going to Dubai, the slot was open for Torque. Tonix member Valerie Poulin explained that her team mates Johanne Cardinal and Luce Brault could not make the trip to Dubai this year. She said that her team had already decided last year that "if someone was not to come to Dubai, the slot would be offered to Monika Wittmer first, as we all thought she deserved it more than anyone else". The 3-way then also invited Jennyfer Caron, another Phoenix member, to compete with Tonix for Canada.

Valerie Poulin said that the four Tonix members liked the new team name as a combination of Torque and Phoenix much better than the other option (Phoque)...

Torque member Nathalie Metivier (Point) was a Cat Woman in 2007, the team who won the Canadian Nationals in 4-way Women and skipped the World Meet 2008 in Maubeuge due to the untimely death of team member Mia Prebinski during a training camp in Deland in March 2008.

Torque member Valerie Poulin (Center Outside) trained and competed with SWiTCH! before, who placed 2nd at the Canadian Nationals 2011, one single point behind Crimson Fox, after losing the team's Point due to injury in Round 2 of the competition. Crimson Fox then competed for Canada at the Mondial Dubai 2012.

Monika Wittmer (left) with the original Fuzion lineup
Phoenix member Jennyfer Caron (Center Inside) placed 2nd in 4-way Women with her team at the Canadian Indoor Skydiving Championship 2014 in March this year, together with her team mate Monika Wittmer (Tail). Monika Wittmer is one of the original Fuzion members and won the Canadian Nationals 2013 in 4-way Women.

The Tonix lineup completed 13 training jumps and 1.5 hours of indoor training before competing at the 5th DIPC 2014 and finished with a 13.4 average, only three points behind 3rd place. Valerie Poulin said that her team had a rough start and lost five points due to penalties in the first three rounds, and another one due to a bad video angle in Round 4. There were great news, as well: "We had the second best score in Round 7, (18-pointer for O-J-15-L) and we beat the Canadian highscore for a round in 4-way Women with the 20-pointer in Round 9."

Fuzion had the previous highscore with a 19-pointer, posted at the Canadian Nationals 2013. The Tonix members at the 5th DIPC 2014 had no set plans for the 2015 season at this point in time.
