Did You Know...

... that the VAF Warriors won the national indoor championship a few weeks after re-selection?

VAF Warriors at the World Meet 2014 in Prostejov
posted Oct 22nd, 2014 - Denmark held the national indoor championships at the wind tunnel in Manchester, Great Britain, this year. The Danish national 4-way team, VAF Warriors, won without too much trouble a few weeks after they were selected once again as the country's national team for the 2015 season.

The competition was still tighter than ever for the VAF Warriors, as Airplay, with former Norwegian national 4-way competitor Kjetil Nordin, has moved within striking distance. The leaderboard shows that the challenger was able to keep up in five of the ten rounds and even outscored the national team in Round 3.

Airplay had good help though by another former Danish national competitor. Flemming Andersen (Voluntas) filled a slot for Airplay when point Maria Ondracek had to cancel on very short notice, and Airplay finished the competition with a new team record average.

Asah Hellenius, former member of the Swedish national 4-way Women team Fire, and her fellow Swede Thomas Seven joined forces with two Aerodyne Steam members (Stefan Rosenberg, Hans Oksen) who did not compete with their own team, which was the national B-team until the new selection. The Swedish/Danish combination (SVDK) finished in 3rd place.

Team Retro is the Larsen and Brusgaard factory team, who hired XL and Satori member John McIver as their player coach and advanced from their last place in AAA last year to the 4th place last week. They outscored the staff team of the Copenhagen Air Experience wind tunnel. Two of the tunnel instructors were completely new to 4-way competition.

The higher scores in the A Class competition are partially supported by a different starting procedure. The clock begins ticking for the Danish A Class teams when they drop the grips from a Star in each round.

There was good competition in the second category of the indoor championship, as well, as Kjetil Nordin reported:

"The A Class competition was very exciting this year. Four of five teams had been training quite seriously. The Danish A Class is in a good place right now. In the last years, there have mostly been pick-up teams only, and no real development. But the trend is changing, and it started with AirRush and KakaPoe/Phoenix. This year we had five teams, all with designated coaching."

"AirRush is moving up to the AAA Class later this year, with only one change in the lineup. Mie Jusjong has replaced Max Simonsen. Mie used to be the videographer for AirPlay in 2012 and 2013. Sally Dyhr was with Phoenix who didn't compete at the World Challenge, where she joined the Funzies. However, Phoenix was still her first commitment, and the Funzies asked Mie to join for this competition before she was invited to take an Airrush slot. Mie didn't want to break her commitment to the Funzies, and Airrush now had to find a substitute. They chose their coach, Flemming Andersen, who now competed in the A Class, as well."

Kjetil Nordin said that even the other two teams also had their own coaches: "Hybris has been coached by Hans Oksen of Aerodyne Steam, and the Meatbombs had Funzies' Peter Knudsen."

First a 4-team battle was expected for the gold medals, which changed after the personnel scrambling, as Kjetil Nordin explained: "It was obvious that the player coach made a difference for the teams. Airrush and Funzies distanced themselves from the beginning. In Round 3, Airrush tried an advanced engineering, with a different Adder (L). Unfortunately, there was a complete meltdown with 15 point deductions. After that, the Funzies managed to keep the distance and won the gold."

"Phoenix left behind Hybris, who still had a good finish. Meatbombs had the fewest busts in the A Class with only one point deduction. Only AAA Class team SVDK was completely clean."
