NSL News Coverage of the FAI Indoor World Cup 2024

Did You Know...

... that the Florida Skydiving League is gaining momentum with iFLY Tunnel Kickers and Indoor Cloud League events?

10 teams: Teiwaz at the FSL June meet in 2005
posted May 22nd, 2014 - The May meet of the Florida Skydiving League was not only a Rookie Class competition between DeLand 3D and DeLand Aurai, which the Sun Path Products NSL News reported on 18 May 2014.

In fact, there were FSL teams in each of the four traditional categories who represented the oldest league in NSL 4way history on last weekend's overall leaderboard, including the 1st place in the Rookie Class.

It has been a very long time since more than nine teams competed for the Florida Skydiving League at a competition of the regular season. The Paraclete XP Outdoor Championship, formerly known as Shamrock Showdown, always attracts many more teams to DeLand for the outdoor season opener. However, it was back in June 2005 when ten teams attended a regular FSL meet. This competition was actually the only one with more than nine teams in the records of SKYLEAGUE.COM since 2003. Only the May meet last year had also nine teams on the FSL leaderboard.

The most exciting FSL competition took place in the AA Class where all three teams from Skydive City in Z-Hills (Zunday - TranZend - Purple HaZe) shared the highscores for all rounds with each other. Meet Director Bob Byrne said that Skydive City is busy with many activities this year, including training camps by five different local 4way teams, with three of them considering plans to compete at the USPA Nationals 2014.

The FSL May Meet saw four local teams competing in Z-Hills. The lineups were made up of some new faces, plus many of the usual FSL and Indoor Cloud League competitors, who are now part of different teams and flying different slots compared to where they were at the close of last season.

AA Class team Zunday returned for a third straight year with three founding members, plus the addition of John Stares, formerly of the Rookie Class team 4nicatorZ, who is now flying the point slot.

Bob Byrne said that the Zunday scores last weekend represent a drop off from where they ended last season. However, it is Zunday's first year in the AA Class, and he added other factors that put the 7.5 average in perspective:

"When you take into account that this was only their second day jumping together, and that John is changing slots and stepping up two competition classes, the scores are quite remarkable and show the value of continuity for a young team."

He said that the Zunday members will continue to leverage the coaching that is available at the FSL Tunnel Kickers at iFLY Orlando, as well as at the FSL meets, as they prepare for the possibility of competing in Ottawa this September.

Robert Waspe at the Z-Scrambles 2014
AA Class team TranZend was formed by combining two former members of the 2013 A Class team Pyro4ic, Grant Underland and Rebecca Stares, with another former 4nicatorZ member, Erica Gorski, and long-time skydiver Gregg Flowers. They have their sights set firmly on doing well at the USPA Nationals 2014, and they have hired 4way world champion of 2001 in 4way Women, Sally Hathaway, as the team coach for the season. The aggressive training schedule includes regular camps at iFly Orlando.

Bob Byrne said that the third A Class team, Purple HaZe, chose its name as a tribute to a popular local skydiver and their former team member who recently died, Rob Waspe. Purple Haze is captained by 4way veteran James Saine. The lineup includes another former member of Pyro4ic, Matt Hillson, with yet another former 4nicatorZ member, David Evans, and long-time skydiver Keith Hanley.

Last not least, Skydive City has also produced another new Rookie Class team, The FoxeZ, composed of four members who are new to 4way competition. They plan to join the FSL Tunnel Kickers at iFLY Orlando soon and then take on the Rookie Class teams from DeLand more seriously...
